Description
Well the it was still there when I got up in the morning (aparently I should ask before inviting friends over to stay the night), so I decided to deposit it outside in the hedge so that the birds wouldn't get at it, but it was recalcitrant in getting off the paper so I tore the corner off and placed it in the hedge.
A quick bit of googling reveals that it's nature as a small example of Sphinx ligustri, or the privet hawk moth,
